Storyline A Public Ransom
Steven (Carlyle Edwards) is a self-serving, amoral author of very mediocre talent. When he stumbles across a crayon-scribbled “missing child” poster with a scrawled telephone number and the words “HLEPP ME?” written on it, he figures it to be harmless–and deciding to base a story around it, he calls the number. This leads to an encounter with Bryant (Goodloe Byron) who flatly claims to have actually kidnapped a girl, stating she will be released only if Steven pays a mere $2000 ransom within two weeks. Steven initially dismisses Bryant as a morbid prankster—until Bryant begins a relationship with his only friend, Rene (Helen Bonaparte) and starts popping up in his life in apparently coincidental, yet increasingly invasive and unsettling ways.Movie details

Visually inspired by the early films of Bresson, Fassbinder, and Jarmusch, A PUBLIC RANSOM is a slow burn character-study cum psychological-thriller in the spirit of the works of Patricia Highsmith.
Pablo D’Stair’s compelling debut film, A Public Ransom, is seen through the eyes of Steven (Carlyle Edwards), a chain-smoking, indecisive, would be writer and cad. In the opening scene, Steven is outside pacing up and down while shouting obscenities to his estranged wife Lisa.
A Public Ransom is a strange beast indeed. Stylized to the point of no return and I can honestly say I haven't seen many films quite like it. It's also something that is not going to be for everyone. In the end though, the true meaning of the term Independent Film is the ability to do something the way you want to do it. This film is a perfect example of that premise.
No too long ago, I reviewed a small indie thriller called "A Public Ransom" directed by Pablo D'Stair. Although I wasn't overly impressed by the end result, I was impressed by the enthusiasm which has gone into making it, especially a very intriguing plot and a elaborate script.
